Closure of Separated Teeth

Diastema, which refers to the gap between two teeth, is usually seen as a result of incompatibilities between tooth and jaw size . It can also be seen due to tooth loss, congenital tooth deficiency and impacted teeth. Diastema seen between more than one tooth is called polydiastema. The most common diastema in the mouth is the diastema between the front two central teeth. The most common cause of diastema between the front two teeth is the abnormal frenulum attachment, that is, the abnormal position of the anterior lip ligament.
Nowadays, with the increasing aesthetic concerns of patients, a lot of patients apply to dental clinics complaining of gaps in their teeth. Various treatment options are available according to the width of the gap between the teeth and the patient’s expectations;
- Orthodontic treatment (braces or clear aligners)
- Direct composite restorations as a minimally invasive treatment
- Porcelain lamina veneers
- Full ceramic crown restorations
If we explain these treatment options a little more;
1) Orthodontic Treatment
In orthodontic treatment, the gaps between the teeth are closed with the help of braces and transparent plates without any action on the teeth. The patient uses his/her natural teeth at the end of the treatment. However, the treatment period is long and the patient must be compatible with the treatment.
2) Direct Composite Restorations
Composite restorations are frequently preferred by patients and physicians because they are a fast, aesthetic and economical treatment option. This treatment is done by applying a tooth-colored composite filling to the tooth surface without any abrasion on the teeth. The treatment is usually completed in a single session and the patient continues his/her normal life.
3) Porcelain Lamina Veneerler
In porcelain lamina veneer restorations, some abrasion is required from the front surface of the tooth, albeit minimal. After the impression taken after the abrasion process, laminates produced in the laboratory are placed in the patient’s mouth. This treatment option requires the patient to visit the clinic 2-3 times. Compared to composite restorations, they last longer in the mouth. However is a more expensive treatment option. It is frequently preferred by patients with high aesthetic concerns.
4) Full Ceramic Crown Restorations
This type of restoration is usually applied in cases where the space between teeth is too large and the tooth dimensions need to be changed. A certain amount of cutting is required from the tooth. It takes more than one session.
