Filling Treatment

Dental filling is the restoration of teeth with various materials to repair material losses caused by decay, fractures and cracks in teeth. The purpose of dental filling is to restore the normal function and aesthetics of the tooth. The most preferred materials for fillings are composite, amalgam, glass ionomer and compomer. However, the World Health Organization recommends the use of alternative materials instead of mercury-containing materials. Therefore, amalgam fillings are not preferred in clinical practice today. Instead of amalgam fillings, aesthetic, repairable and easy-to-use composite resins are preferred. Dental fillings are applied by restorative dentists who are specialized in the field and by general dentists.

How is a Tooth Filling Done?

The stages of making a dental filling are as follows;

1) Indication: After examining the teeth clinically and radiologically, the dentist decides which teeth will be restored and the choice of direct or indirect method.

2) Color selection: Color selection should be made before the teeth to be filled are isolated and dried. Color selection should be made under daylight, taking the color of neighboring teeth as a reference.

3)Occlusion control: Before the filling process, reference contact points are determined in centric and non-centric occlusion and care should be taken to protect these points after the filling.

4) Isolation: In order for the filling to serve in the mouth for a long time, appropriate isolation procedures must be used. The ideal isolation procedure is the use of a rubber dam or rubber sheet. In cases where a rubber sheet cannot be used, isolation is provided with cotton rolls.

5) Application of local anesthesia

6)Cavity preparation: The tooth must be cleaned of decay and made ready for filling. At this stage, special burs and caries staining agents attached to rotary instruments are used.

7)Making the restoration: Composite filling materials are polymerized with light and applied to the tooth.

8)Finishing and polishing: After the filling is done, occlusion control is performed, irregularities on the filling surface are eliminated and the polishing process is applied.

Things to Consider After Filling Procedure

After the filling procedure, you should not eat or drink until the time specified by your doctor has passed. If you start eating and drinking before the anesthesia wears off, you may damage your tongue, lips and cheek. You should not bite your lips and cheeks to check whether the anesthesia has worn off. Because you may not be able to adjust the biting force while you are under anesthesia and may damage your lips and cheeks. The tooth with the filling should not be used to eat very hard foods. It should not be used to break the shells of nuts such as pistachios and hazelnut shells. It should also not be used to open bottle caps. Because these types of forces cause the filled tooth to break. Sensitivity, tingling and unusual sensations are normal in the first days of the filled tooth. These symptoms are temporary. Extremely hot and cold foods and drinks should be avoided on the first day. If you experience sudden and severe pain in the filled tooth, falling or breaking of the filling, or inability to step on the filled tooth, please consult your doctor.
